In spite of rapid digitization there's a long way to go before we lose our dependence on this very important product. While bulk materials such as iron, aluminium, plastics and glass account for over 80% (weight), valuable and toxic materials are found in smaller quantities but are still of high importance. The material composition of different appliances is often similar, but the percentage of different components can vary a lot. As you read this text, more than 199 tons of paper has already been produced.
50% of the waste of businesses is composed of paper. Recycling 1 ton of paper saves around 682.5 gallons of oil, 26,500 liters of water and 17 trees. Paper was invented as a tool for communication, but today, paper is used more for packaging which makes up 1/3 or more of our trash. In spite of generating close to 12 MT per year of paper waste, India imports around 4 MT of waste paper as raw material for it's paper industry!
